Saint Bishoy

traditional dates c. 320 – 417 CE

The ascetic known as 'the beloved of Christ', among the founding figures of Wadi al-Natrun's monastic valley. A major monastery there still bears his name today.

Saint Demiana

late 3rd – early 4th century CE (traditional martyrdom c. 305–307)

A virgin martyr venerated throughout the Coptic Church; her convent in the northern Delta is a major pilgrimage site. Her story made Demiana one of the most given female names among Copts to this day.

Jean-François Champollion

1790 – 1832

In his 1822 Lettre à M. Dacier he announced the decipherment of hieroglyphs — a breakthrough built on his command of Coptic, whose vocabulary revealed the Egyptian language standing behind the ancient signs. He famously kept thinking in Coptic while working on royal names.

Walter Ewing Crum

1865 – 1944

His A Coptic Dictionary (1939) remains the standard scholarly dictionary of the language and underlies many entries in this platform's dictionary.

Ragheb Moftah

21 Dec 1898 – 16 Jun 2001

Egyptian musicologist who devoted his life to preserving Coptic Orthodox liturgical chant. Together with the British musicologist Ernest Newlandsmith he set the orally transmitted melodies into Western notation, and went on to record the entire corpus of chants; his collection is preserved in the Music Division of the Library of Congress.

Aziz Suryal Atiya

1898 – 1988

Historian of the Crusades, of Islam and of Eastern Christianity who carried Coptic studies onto the world academic stage. Author of A History of Eastern Christianity (1968) and editor of The Coptic Encyclopedia (1991); at the University of Utah he founded the Middle East Center and the library that bears his name.

Marcus Simaika Pasha

28 Feb 1864 – 2 Oct 1944

Coptic community figure who founded the Coptic Museum in Old Cairo in 1908, gathering the scattered heritage of Coptic art into what grew into the world's largest collection of its kind; the museum was inaugurated on 14 March 1910.

Matta El Meskeen

20 Sep 1919 – 8 Jun 2006

Born Youssef Iskandar, he led the renewal of the Monastery of Saint Macarius in Wadi al-Natrun from 1969, transforming a nearly abandoned house of six elderly monks into a large monastic community, and wrote prolifically on monastic spirituality — 181 books by his monastery's account.
