Born Youssef Iskandar, he led the renewal of the Monastery of Saint Macarius in Wadi al-Natrun from 1969, transforming a nearly abandoned house of six elderly monks into a large monastic community, and wrote prolifically on monastic spirituality — 181 books by his monastery's account.
