Historian of the Crusades, of Islam and of Eastern Christianity who carried Coptic studies onto the world academic stage. Author of A History of Eastern Christianity (1968) and editor of The Coptic Encyclopedia (1991); at the University of Utah he founded the Middle East Center and the library that bears his name.
