Egyptian musicologist who devoted his life to preserving Coptic Orthodox liturgical chant. Together with the British musicologist Ernest Newlandsmith he set the orally transmitted melodies into Western notation, and went on to record the entire corpus of chants; his collection is preserved in the Music Division of the Library of Congress.
