Invited by Ragheb Moftah, the British musicologist Ernest Newlandsmith spends nine winters notating the orally transmitted liturgical repertory as sung by the blind cantor Mikhail El-Batanouny. The resulting folio volumes — preserved today in the Library of Congress — were the first systematic Western notation of the Coptic chant tradition.
