الكنيسة المعلقة (كنيسة السيدة العذراء مريم)
Cairo · origins in the 3rd century CE; papal residence from 1047
Built above the southern gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon — hence its name 'hanging' — this is one of the oldest churches in Egypt. From 1047 it served as the fixed residence of the Coptic Pope in Cairo, and its interior preserves celebrated collections of icons.
