The monastery bears the name of Saint Samuel the Confessor (c. 597–695 AD), who was tonsured in Wadi Natrun and became renowned for his steadfast defense of the Orthodox faith after the Council of Chalcedon. He was tortured and had his eye gouged out by Byzantine soldiers. The monastery is also known as 'Old Monastery,' which witnessed repeated massacres throughout history. Monastery estimates suggest that over 1,100 ancient martyrs are buried on its grounds across the centuries.
