Site of Pachomius's first cenobitic community on the Nile north of Thebes. The exact location is debated by scholars; the map marker is approximate and the description should be read accordingly.
Also known as: Tabenna · Tabennessis
c. 320 CE: Pachomius gathers his first organized monastic community here or nearby, giving rise to the Pachomian congregation.
Later 4th century: leadership of the congregation shifts to other houses, while Tabennisi remains its founding memory.
