Champollion reads royal names on the Rosetta Stone and Philae obelisk, proving hieroglyphs record the Egyptian language. His command of Coptic was decisive: he recognized words like 'sun' and 'gifts' behind the signs and called Coptic 'the old Egyptian language preserved by the church'.
